Ehrensvärd Society - 100 years for the benefit of Suomenlinna

The Ehrensvärd Society was founded in 1921 with the purpose of informing the public about the Suomenlinna fortress and its history.

In order to achieve its goal, the Ehrensvärd Society maintains the Ehrensvärd Museum and the Suomenlinna Museum, arranges guided tours of Suomenlinna and an adventureous tour for children based on historical facts, publishes literature and develops tourist services. Ehrensvärd Society has also built a cannon sloop on the Suomenlinna shipyard following 18th century plans and arranges sailing tours with the ship in the summer time.

The Society has also produced the wide-screen presentation ”Suomenlinna Experience”, which tells about the history of the fortress and is shown in the Suomenlinna Museum.

The Ehrensvärd Society founded the Ehrensvärd Museum in the 1930s. The museum collections represent the Swedish and Russian eras in the fortress’ history. The Ehrensvärd Museum has always been free of charge for school groups.

In order to finance its activities the Ehrensvärd Society services include Café Piper, the Museum Shop and the Artillery Bay Kiosk.

The Quest of the Lost Crown

The first adventurous tour for children, ”The Quest of the Lost Crown” was introduced in 1998. More than 70 000 people have since participated on the tour and in 2017 the tour will celebrate its 20th summer.

The Ehrensvärd Society has been responsible for the guided tours of Suomenlinna since 1963. It offers trained and authorized guides and tourist information. The Ehrensvärd Society uses the best specialists in the training of it’s guides. The Ehrensvärd Society also organizes guided tours on the islands of Lonna and Vallisaari.

The Ehrensvärd Society organizes regular guided tours of Suomenlinna fortress area from 1st of June until the end of August in Finnish, English, Russian and Swedish, and in the wintertime in English and Russian. Guided tours are also available by reservation in 16 different languages. There are approximately 1000 groups a year of which 200 are school groups.

The cannon sloop Diana that has been built at Suomenlinna’s shipyard like its 1700s role models, begins its sailings in May.

The cannon sloop tours offer unique sea voyages with an old vessel and a sense of history in an interesting and exciting way. The crew in 1700th century gear enlivens the journey on board the cannon sloop Diana. The vessel moves by means of sailing or rowing, as well as with a motor. The vessel’s passenger capacity will vary according to the programme. The sailing season lasts until the end of September 2015. The group will be collected from Suomenlinna or Halkolaituri in Helsinki Kruununhaka.
